Prepare to make a difference in your community and advance your career with a Master of Public Administration (MPA). Designed for current and aspiring professionals in government, nonprofit organizations, and public service, the MPA program develops the leadership and management skills needed to succeed at the local, state, and national levels. Choose the path that fits your goals, whether that’s earning your full MPA or pursuing an individual graduate certificate. To earn the MPA, students complete the Public Leadership Certificate plus one specialty certificate in either Criminal Justice Management, Nonprofit Management or Public Management. Each certificate can also be pursued on its own and applied toward the MPA. You’ll learn how to lead employees and volunteers, navigate political systems, work with elected officials, collaborate across sectors, and engage diverse communities. Along the way, you’ll connect with faculty and fellow students who are active in their communities and build a professional network that can support you throughout your career. Graduates have gone on to roles in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, municipalities, and private-sector organizations that work with government.

Criminal Justice Management
The Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Management prepares you to address the complex challenges facing today’s criminal justice system. Through coursework in criminal justice, leadership, public administration, policy, and ethics, you’ll build practical skills and explore topics such as law enforcement policy, criminal justice planning, victimology, and organizational leadership.

Nonprofit Management
The Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management prepares you to navigate the unique challenges of leading and supporting nonprofit organizations. Through coursework in nonprofit management, fundraising, strategic planning, human resources, and marketing, you’ll build practical skills and explore how nonprofit organizations develop resources, engage communities, manage teams, and advance their missions.

Public Leadership
The Graduate Certificate in Public Leadership prepares current and aspiring public service professionals to become effective leaders in government, nonprofit organizations, and other public service settings. Through coursework in leadership, management, public policy, and decision-making, you’ll develop practical skills to lead diverse teams, navigate political systems, build effective partnerships, and make ethical decisions.

Public Management
The Graduate Certificate in Public Management prepares professionals to strengthen their leadership and management skills for careers in public administration, government, and public service. Through coursework in areas such as public budgeting, human resource management, administrative law, city planning, and economic development, you’ll build practical skills for managing public agencies, programs, and resources while responding to community needs.

    • community engagement, 
    • budgeting and public finance, and

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the application requirements for the Master of Public Administration program? 

Prospective students should access the graduate application online at connect.westfield.ma.edu/apply/

The following material must be received for an application to be reviewed:

  • Completed graduate application and $50 application fee.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended indicating a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • Three professional or academic letters of recommendation. At least one academic recommendation is suggested. 
  • A satisfactory GRE or MAT score is recommended only if it will strengthen the application. 
  • Narrative statement (of approximately 350 words) about your professional goals, academic experience, work experience, and other factors such as academic achievements not reflected in transcripts that support your application. 

Applicants who believe that the materials requested in the application do not accurately represent their academic potential are encouraged to include their rationale in the narrative statement. The narrative statement will be considered a writing sample to evaluate your ability to express yourself in written form. 

Professional experience and experience overcoming adversity are viewed positively and are considered in the application review process. Applicants with significant professional experience or special qualifications who do not meet admission standards will be considered on an individual basis.

How do the stackable graduate certificates work toward an MPA?

Westfield State University’s stackable graduate certificates provide a flexible pathway toward earning a Master of Public Administration (MPA). Students pursuing the MPA must complete the Public Leadership Certificate along with a specialty certificate in Criminal Justice Management, Nonprofit Management or Public Management. 

Do I have to submit GRE/MAT scores when I apply? 

While not required, GRE or MAT scores can strengthen a candidate's application.

How long will it take me to complete the master’s degree?

The duration for completion varies, with most students finishing in approximately two years, depending on their chosen course load per semester. Whether attending part-time or full-time and utilizing courses offered in fall, spring, and summer terms, flexibility is key. It's essential to note that students must fulfill degree requirements within a maximum timeframe of six years.

What is HyFlex modality?

HyFlex is a course format that gives students maximum flexibility. In a HyFlex class, some students attend in person on campus while others participate remotely at the same time. This approach allows students to choose the learning environment that works best for them—and in some cases, it makes it possible to complete the program fully online while still preserving classroom opportunities for those who prefer an on-campus experience.

Do you offer graduate assistantships?

Yes, a limited number of graduate assistantships are available each year for graduate students. These opportunities are competitive and are awarded to students with excellent academic records who are enrolled in a graduate degree program.

Is graduate housing available?

Welch Hall Apartments offer graduate students a comfortable, convenient place to live while staying connected to campus. Choose from four-person apartments with single or premium single bedrooms, with utilities and internet included. You can apply with friends or sign up individually and be matched with other graduate students.

Each fully furnished apartment includes a shared living room, a full kitchen with a breakfast bar, and comfortable bathroom facilities, giving you the space to study, relax, and feel at home.

Living at Welch Hall also means you'll have easy access to campus resources. Free on-campus laundry, affordable parking, the Ely Library, fitness centers, and other student services are all nearby.

Will I receive academic support?

Every student is paired with a dedicated advisor who guides you from choosing classes to planning your future. You’ll also have access to resources like the Banacos Center, Writing Center, and Career Center.

Can I take a course without enrolling into the program?

Yes, students can take up to two courses (six credits) non-matriculated prior to matriculating into the program. Financial aid is not available for non-matriculated courses and cost can be found on our tuition and fees page. If you are interested in taking non-matriculated courses please contact the Registrar at registrar@westfield.ma.edu or 413-579-3200 for assistance.

For students interested in taking more than six credits non-matriculated and will not be applying the credits to a degree additional credits may be taken by completing the professional development waiver.
