Westfield State University Awarded $111,824 Life Sciences Workforce Training Grant
WESTFIELD, Mass. — Westfield State University has been awarded a $111,824 Post-secondary Education and Training Grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) to strengthen workforce preparation and expand hands-on learning opportunities for students pursuing careers in the life and health sciences.
The grant is part of more than $12.3 million in Education and Workforce Development Grants announced by Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. Through the Post-secondary Education and Training Grant program, the MLSC is investing more than $7.3 million in 22 colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations to enhance industry-aligned certificate and degree programs that prepare students for high-demand careers in the life sciences.
This marks the second consecutive year that Westfield State's Department of Biology has received funding through the MLSC program. Last year's grant supported the renovation of a portion of Wilson Hall, creating the University's new Bioinformatics Laboratory. This year's award will fund specialized laboratory equipment that will enhance instruction and provide students in the life and health sciences with the hands-on training and technical skills needed to succeed in today's workforce.
“This continued investment by the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center is an investment in our students, our faculty, and the future of the Commonwealth's life sciences workforce,” said President Linda Thompson. “By expanding access to advanced laboratory equipment and experiential learning opportunities, we are preparing graduates with the knowledge, technical expertise, and problem-solving skills needed to thrive in one of Massachusetts' most important and innovative industries. We are grateful to Governor Healey, Lieutenant Governor Driscoll, and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center for their continued partnership and support.”
The award builds on Westfield State's commitment to preparing graduates for careers in healthcare, biotechnology, public health, and other high-demand life sciences fields. Through partnerships with healthcare providers, industry leaders, and community organizations, the University continues to connect classroom learning with real-world experience while helping address the Commonwealth's growing workforce needs.
The grant also advances the goals of Westfield State's Infinite Opportunities Strategic Plan by strengthening innovative learning, expanding student success, and deepening partnerships that support regional economic development and workforce readiness.
Since the launch of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Initiative, the MLSC has invested more than $240 million in education and workforce development programs supporting public schools, colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations, and training initiatives across Massachusetts, helping ensure the Commonwealth remains a global leader in the life sciences.
